Travel Tips

Weather by Season

  • Being a massive country, the sixth largest in the world, Australia is home to a wide range of seasons and weather systems that help define the geographical characteristics of its vast expanse. For the most part though, especially in southern coastal cities like Sydney and Melbourne, the 'Land Down Under' has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. But unlike what travelers from the United States are familiar with, the seasons in Australia are the opposite of their northern hemisphere counterparts. Summer runs from December to February, Autumn covers March to May, Winter goes from June to August, and Spring is September to November. The average temperature during the Summer is 84F and it goes down to an average of 55F during the Winter.
  • The other major variation of seasonal patterns apply to the northern part of the country. In regions like Queensland and the Northern Territory, the climate is tropical and experiences two seasons: the wet season (which goes from November to April) and the dry season (which starts in May and ends in October). During the wet season, monsoonal rains can lead to flooding and thunderstorms, while the dry season brings clear skies and cooler temperatures.
  • Summers are excellent for taking a dip in the beaches of Sydney. The Autumn season is a great time to watch the foliage of Canberra adopt their stunning fiery colors or to check out the vibrant laneways of Melbourne amidst the excitement of Formula 1's Australian Grand Prix. Adventurous travelers make a beeline to the Australian Alps or opt to go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef during the winter. And Spring is a fabulous time for some wine tasting at a vineyard while admiring the blooming flowers. Overall, travelers can expect a diverse range of amazing experiences while visiting Australia any time during the year. Just advise your clients to prepare for the seasons accordingly.
